Walk Like A Lady – bags on the radar

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

In recent years, the handbag world has been loving fun, edgy bags covered in studs and fringe. Shapes have been varied from slouchy hobos, trapezoids, rounds and so much variety. And while Chanel and Brikin are still quintessential “IT” bags, there has been less focus on the lady bag. Structure, polish and top-handles are key [...]

New line, Roccatella, on QVC tonight (plus giveaway!)

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

We are always looking to bring you new handbag designers on PurseBlog. Today we have a new line that is not only from a designer we know and love but also in a great price range. Be&D Creative Director, Steve Dumain, is launching a new handbag brand called Roccatella tonight on QVC (7 PM EST).

The line will exclusively be featured and sold on QVC tonight, 9/30, at 7 PM EST. The assortment you will see will be a collection of nine pieces made with durable yet soft calfskin. Price range will be from $199 to $299. What you can expect to get from this line is luxury and style at a very attainable price. The aesthetic Steve brings to Be&D differs from Roccatella, but Roccatella remains trend-driven and statement-making.

We plan to tune in tonight to see the line in person (and see Steve!). You should tune in as well, not only because we think you will love the collection but also because we have a giveaway with Roccatella for you all.

“Roccatella is inspired by (and named after) my grandmother,” said Dumain. “She has always been a modern woman to me with a classic sense of style that is, at the same time, chic and forward thinking. I also referenced my extensive vintage luggage and bag collection, which is always an influence in my overall aesthetic.”

Judith Leiber gives us irresistible 1920s glamour

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

After featuring a crystal-encrusted Valentino bag so prominently yesterday, it’s only fair to recognize the brand that made sparkly animal clutches into a worldwide business. Judith Leiber can bedazzle anything and make it into a great work of inventiveness, but my favorites from the brand are often among its more restrained offerings.

It’s difficult to imagine a context in which the Judith Leiber Crystal Chain Strap Clutch could be considered “restrained,” and yet that’s exactly what this evening bag is, when compared to a Swarovski-studded Dachsund.

Art Deco-inspired fashion has an exuberance and life to it that I just love – we had just emerged from the first World War and had yet to see the Great Depression, the Holocaust or the Cold War. The economy was booming, opportunity appeared to be everywhere, and you can see that reflected in the clothing and design that reached acclaim during the era. The lines and colors in this minaudiere are clearly referential of that era, and it makes me want to go out and find a spangly, drop-waist party frock with which to pair it. Buy through Saks for $2495.

Kate Spade has a novel idea for clutches

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Well, the idea may be literally novel, but some people say it’s not figuratively novel – we’ll get to that in a minute. All I know is that the Kate Spade Book of the Month Clutches appeal very strongly to the book nerd residing just below my surface.

I’ve always been a reader. I used to make forts out of couch cushions in my parents’ living room and read with a flashlight when I was in elementary school, and the habit never really abated, even though my days of fort-building are probably over. I took so many comparative lit classes in college that sometimes I’d have assigned reading of 18 to 20 novels in a single semester, and I had so many credits in the department by the time I graduated that it became my minor by accident. For me to see two of my greatest loves, handbags and books, come together in such a perfect way almost brings a tear to this old blogger’s eye.

I’ve recently decided to join Megs and Vlad in New York City this spring, and that means I likely won’t be able to continue moving from apartment to apartment with my many and varied bookcases, as I’ve done since college. I’m seriously considering the purchase of a Kindle, but there’s just something beautiful about an actual, physical book that these clutches capture perfectly.

The only problem (or the problem that some people are having, anyway) appears to be that Kate Spade isn’t the first company to do a book-inspired clutch. Indie designer Olympia Le-Tan came out with book clutches before Kate Spade did, and you can find any number of ladies with similar ideas selling their wares on Etsy.

Le-Tan’s clutches have a much different feel to me than Spade’s poppy, bright handbags, and as such, I have a hard time caring that the brand perhaps piggybacked on someone else’s inspiration (plus, there’s no indication that Le-Tan was indeed the first person to have this idea). To paraphrase Coco Chanel, those who think they have been inspired by no one must not have very long memories. Buy through Kate Spade for $325 apiece.
